Discussion About Funny People

  1. Sheila

I read what I assume (and hope) was an early draft of this screenplay. Frankly, I’m surprised it made the cut here. It’s good, and sporadically funny, but it’s certainly not great. I gave the ‘Characters’ a ‘4’ because there’s no way to give half points. Great set-ups, but a lot left on the table.

My issue is that the writing is occasionally just plain lazy. I suppose if you’re Apatow, and you’re working with comedians you know can improvise, you don’t have to adhere to convention. But as a reader and somewhat experienced writer, it irks me to see things like “He says something funny here,” or lines to that effect. Do we work at the craft so we can get to the point of laziness about it? Besides, those things really bring the story to a screeching halt for me.

This read kept me from reading his other works. Anybody familiar with his other stuff? Is this ‘thing’ with him?
