Discussion About New Girl

  1. Abi

My biggest takeaway from this script was the strength of the opening. The discovery of an affair may be a cliched way to present a dilemma, but the way it’s set up in the pilot makes a classic concept feel new and reveals a lot about Jess’s character right off the bat.

I agree with Abi. I think it’s good drama to see how a character reacts when the chips are down or their life has been turned upside down. And when it’s relatable and painful at a distance it’s comedy.
The inherent conflict of a new girl coming to live with a bunch of dudes also provides a lot of the situational & character humour. I love how she deals with her grief of a lost relationship by balling her eyes out on the shared couch and how the roomates approach her like an injured animal. Awesome show.
I also love that the original pitch/series bible document is available online hopefully with Elizabeth Merriwether’s permission.
